astronomical unit the average distance between the earth and the sun
universe the entirety of space, including all matter, energy, planets, stars, galaxies, and the contents of intergalactic space.
galaxy a massive system of stars, stellar remnants, interstellar gas, dust, dark matter, and other astronomical objects bound together by gravity
celestial object any object existing in space, such as planets, stars, moons, asteroid, comets, galaxies
stars A luminous sphere of plasma held together by its gravity and emitting light and other electromagnetic radiation
planets A celestial body that orbits a star, is massive enough for its gravity to make it round and has cleared its neighboring region of other objects
dwarf planets celestial bodies that orbit the sun, are nearly spherical in shape, but have not cleared their orbital path of other debris.
moons A natural satellites that orbit planets or dwarf planets.
asteroids A small rocky bodies that orbits the son or star
comet A small solar system body that is composed to rock.
telescopes An instrument that aids in the observation of remote objects by collecting and focusing light
spectra The range of colors obtain when light is dispersed by a prism or diffraction grating.
wavelength The distance between successive crests of a wave, such as light or sound
Hertzsprung Russell Diagram A graph that shows the relationship between a star temperature (color) and luminosity
Big Bang Theory The prevailing cosmological model that explains the origin and evolution of the universe.
Absolute magnitude The intrinsic brightness of a celestial object.
Apparent magnitude the brightness of a celestial object seen from earth
sunspot dark spot on the sun's surface caused by magnetic activity
solar flare A sudden, intense brightening on the sun's surface, often associated with sunspots.
prominence Large, bright, gaseous feature extending outward from the sun's surface
corona the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, visible during a total solar eclipse
Photosphere The visible surface of the sun.
chromosphere The middle layer of the sun atmosphere, Visible during a total solar eclipse
Radiative Zone The region of the sun where energy is transferred primarily by a electromagnetic radiation.
Convective Zone The region of the sun where energy is transferred primarily by convection
