Notes About the Sun

QuestionAnswer
Astronomy The study of the moon, stars, and other objects in space
Axis An imaginary straight line on which an object rotates.
Rotation When an object spins it is said to be rotating.
Revolution The movment of an object around another object.
Orbit The path one object takes around another.
Tilt To move into or assume a sloping position or direction.
Solstice Two days of the year on which the noon sun is directly overhead at either 23.5 South or 23.5 North.
Equinox The two days of the yearon which neither hemisphere is tilted toward or away fromm the sun.
Phase One of the different shapes of the moon as seen from Earth.
Eclipse When our view of one object in the sky is blocked by either another object, or the Earths shadow.
Gravity The attractitve force between two objects
Tide The periodic rise and fall of the waters of the ocean and its inlets, produced by the attraction of the moon and sun, and occurring about every 12 hours.
Satellite A small object orbiting a larger one. There are many electronic objects that orbit the Earth.
Telescope A optical instrument for making distant objects appear larger and therefore nearer.
Geocentric Simply means the Earth in the Center. People used to believe the Universe was geocentric, or that the Earth was in the center of the Universe.
Heliocentric Measured or considered as being seen from the center of the sun.
Inner planet Is any of the four planets closest to the sun: Mercury, Venus, the earth, or Mars.
Outer planet Is any of the five planets with orbits outside the orbit of Mars: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
Comet A small, frozen mass of dust and gas revolving around the sun.
Asteroid A rock, or Minor Planet orbiting the Sun.
Meteroid Any small object in Outer Space, such as dust, or a rock.
Constellation A grouping of stars which have been given names by ancient astronomers because of the way they look.
Galaxy A group of stars, gas and dust held together by gravity.
Universe The whole known world.
Milky Way Our Galaxy.
