Ch. 1 Sec. 1 Earth in Space

QuestionAnswer
Astronomy The study of outer space and objects in it
Revolution The time it takes an object to travel around the sun
Orbit The path an object takes as it revolves around another object. Earth's orbit as it travels around the sun is an ellipse.
Rotation The spinning motion of Earth or any object in space, like a top on its axis
Seasons/Days These changes are caused by the change in the angle of the sunlight hitting the Earth as it travels around the sun.
Axis The imaginary line around which the Earth rotates, extending through the poles
spherical shaped like a ball or a globe
Solstice The two days of the year on which the noon sun is directly overhead at either 23.5 degrees S or 23.5 degrees N.
Equinox The two days of the year on which neither hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the sun
Vernal Equinox The day of the year that marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.
Autumnal Equinox The day of the year that marks the beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere.
