| cell wall | layer outside the cell membrane in plant cells that provides support |
| nucleus | organelle that contains DNA and controls cell's activities |
| organelles | the structures inside a cell that perform specific functions |
| vacuole | organelle that stores water; largest organelle in plant cell |
| mitochondria | organelle that breaks down food and produces energy |
| ribosomes | organelle where proteins are made |
| endoplasmic reticulum | transportation network that takes molecules where they need to go |
| chloroplast | part of plant cell that uses energy from the sun to create food for the cell |
| cytoplasm | jelly-like substance inside the cell membrane that holds and protects organelles |
| autotrophs | organisms that convert energy from light or inorganic substances to usable energy |
| heterotrophs | organisms that obtain energy from other organisms |
