QuestionAnswer
What is Symbiosis? Is an interaction between two different organisms that are in the same ecosystem.
What is Parasitism? One organism benefits while the other (host) is harmed.
What is Commensalism? One organism benefits while the other is unaffected.
What is Mutualism? Both organisms benefit.
What is a food chain? Is a single, LINEAR path showing the flow of energy from the Sun to a producer and through different levels of consumers.
What is a Food Web? Is overlapping food chains with different pathways to show the flow of energy in an ecosystem.
What is a Producer? Basis of the food web. They transform light energy into chemical energy (food) through photosynthesis.
What is a Decomposer? They get energy by breaking down dead organisms.
What is a Consumer? Get energy by consuming other organisms. Herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores are all heterotrophs (eats others).
What is a trophic level? The position an organism occupies in the food web.
What is the difference between the DNA and Chromosomes? They are both DNA. A chromosome is DNA coiled and are formed during cell division.
What is a Gene? Segments of DNA that contain instructions for a specific trait (eye color).
What is an Allele? The different forms of genes (brown, blue eyes).
What is a Genotype? The combination of alleles that an organism carries for a certain trait. (Bb)
What is a Phenotype? What we can observe in organisms. The RESULT of the genotype. (Brown eyes).
What is a Dominant Homozygous genotype? A genotype where both alleles are dominant. (BB)
What is a Recessive Homozygous genotype? A genotype where both alleles are recessive. (bb)
What is a Dominant Allele? An allele that is always expressed when present. Represented with a CAPITAL letter.
What is a Recessive Allele? An allele that is only expressed if the dominant is NOT present. Can only be seen when both alleles are recessive.
What is Asexual Reproduction? Examples. Is when an organism reproduces and creates an exact copy of itself.
What is Sexual Reproduction? Examples. Is when an Organism reproduces providing a new cell ½ of the original cell's DNA.
What are some characteristics of the Archea Domain? NO Nucleus! / Single Celled. Found in EXTREME environments where no other life can exist.
What are some characteristics of the Bacteria Domain? NO Nucleus! / Single-Celled. Found (almost) everywhere on Earth.
What are some characteristics of the Eukarya Domain? Its cells have a nucleus and organelles. Most organisms you can see are in this domain. Divided up into KINGDOMS.
What occurs in the Carbon Cycle? Is a complex series of processes through which all of the carbon atoms in the world recycle.
What is Photosynthesis? Plants take in carbon dioxide (CO2) and release oxygen (O2).
What is Cellular Respiration? BOTH plants and animals release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the air through cellular respiration (in mitochondria).
What are Autotrophs? They make their own food.
What are Heterotrophs? They must eat other living things for food.
What is Mitosis? A process of cell division where the new cells are identical to the parent and have a full set of DNA. Used for growth and repair.
What is Meiosis? A process of cell division where the new cells are unique and have a half set of DNA. (sperm or egg ). Used for reproduction of the whole organism.
What is Natural Selection? Over time, more individuals that are best adapted to their environment make up a population.
What is the Fossil Record? The incomplete record of the extinct organisms that are related to each other and their common ancestor.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
