Forces and motion

TermDefinition
Gravity Gravity --- the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass.
Mass Mass --- the property of a body that is a measure of its inertia and that is commonly taken as a measure of the amount of material it contains and causes it to have weight in a gravitational field.
Weight Weight --- a measure of the heaviness of an object
Push Push --- to press against with force in order to drive or impel.
Pull Friction Pull Friction --- resists the motion of the object when the surface of an object comes in contact with the surface of another object.
Force push or pull applied to an object
Friction force that opposes movement between touching surfaces and always acts against the direction of motion
motion the action or process of moving or of changing place or position; movement
Inertia matter’s resistance to change in motion
speed the rate at which someone or something moves or travels.
position the place where someone or something is in relation to other people or things.
axis The two perpendicular lines on a coordinate grid. Horizontal axis is called the X. The vertical axis is called the Y.
Unbalanced force forces that are not equal causing an object to move or change motion
Acceleration the rate at which the speed of a moving object changes over time
Direction a course along which someone or something moves
Velocity quickness of motion
Air resistance the forces that are in opposition to the relative motion of an object as it passes
Momentum the quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass and velocity.
Resist withstand the action or effect of.
Deceleration the slowing down of an object
Newton's first law An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion at constant speed and in a straight line unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
Newton's second law The acceleration of the body is directly proportional to the net force acting on the body and inversely proportional to the mass of the body
Newton's third law for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
motion Graphs a useful tool for visualizing and communicating information about an object's motion.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
