invertebrate any animal that lacks a spine, more than 90 percent of all living animal species lack a spine. Examples: crabs, spiders, snails, clams and more.
vertebrate any animal with a backbone, which also means the animal has a muscular, skeletal and nervous system.
taxonomy the classification of organisms based on shared characteristics, this system was created by Carolus Linnaeus in 1730
binomial nomenclature the unique two-part scientific name that indicates a organisms genus and species, also created by Carolus Linnaeus.
species a groups of similar organisms that can mate and reproduce. the most specific level of classification
protists a microorganism in the Domain Eukarya, live in moist environments, most are harmless, some are dangerous. Example: parasites that live on or in a host. These can be either autotrophs or heterotrophs
virus tiny, nonliving particle that enters and reproduces in a living cell. these particles do not need food or energy to grow.
bacteria microscopic, single-celled organisms that lack a nucleus, they have cell walls and reproduce rapidly, these organisms are everywhere and can live in extreme and non-extreme conditions.
archea single-celled organism with no nucleus and live in extreme conditions
eukarya includes the kingdoms of plants, animals, fungi and protista. these organisms have nulcei that contain DNA, contains both unicellular & multicellular organisms.
mammal these organisms are vertebrates, feed their young with milk, have hair, can regulate body temperature and bear live young. Examples: dolphins, platypus, kangaroos, and more.
fungi this organism has eukaryotic cells with cell walls, are heterotrophs/decomposers, reproduce via spores, can be helpful or harmful
