Forces and Motion

TermDefinition
Gravity The force that attracts an object towards the center of the Earth, or toward any other physical body having mass
Mass The measurement of the amount of matter something contains
Weight The measurement of the pull of gravity on an object
Push When force moves an object away from something
Pull When force brings an object closer
Inertia An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion at constant speed and in a straight line unless acted on by an unbalanced force
Mass The amount of matter in an object
Newton's 2nd Law F = ma, or net force is equal to mass times acceleration
Newton's 3rd Law For every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction
Friction The resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.
Motion The action or process of moving or being moved.
Force Strength or energy as an attribute of physical action or movement.
Speed The rate at which someone or something is able to move or operate.
Axis An imaginary line about which a body rotates.
Position A place where someone or something is located or has been put.
Acceleration The rate of change of velocity per unit of time.
Distance-Time (Motion) Graph Shows how far an object has travelled in a given time.
Balanced Forces Those that are equal in magnitude but opposite in direction.
Unbalanced Forces Forces applied to an object in opposite directions that are not equal in size.
Direction A course along which someone or something moves
Velocity The speed of something in a given direction.
Air resistance The force acting on an object that is moving through air flowing in the opposite direction
Momentum The quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass and velocity.
Resist Withstand the action or effect of.
Deceleration Reduction in speed or rate.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
