SOL 6.7

Layers of the atmosphere, weather instruments, weather maps, storms

TermDefinition
Air Density How dense the air particles are in the air. As air pressure increases so does this.
Temperature Air particles spread out and air pressure decreases when air is warmed. They come together more tightly and air pressure increases when air particles are cooled.
Humidity The amount of water vapor in the air. This increases as air pressure decreases.
Altitude The height above Earth's surface. As this increases the air pressure decreases.
High Pressure As air cools, it becomes more dense and sinks toward the Earth's surface spinning clockwise.
Low Pressure As air warms, it becomes less dense and rises above the earth's surface spinning counterclockwise.
Cold Front When cold air mass replaces a warm air mass. Temperatures will drop.
Warm Front Where a warm air mass replaces a cold air mass. Temperatures rise.
Stationary Front This front stays in one place for a long period of time. The cold and warm air will be close but not colliding.
Occluded Front When a cold air mass takes over a warm air mass.
Flash Flood Sudden intense rain from slow moving thunderstorms where floodwaters rise quickly without warning.
Tornado Very violent windstorm formed on land with wind speeds up to 300 mph.
Hurricane Tropical storm that forms over really warm ocean water. Can be up to 600 miles across.
Water Spout Weak tornado that forms over water.
Drought lack of rain or snow over a long period of time.
Blizzard Severe winter storm that brings strong winds, very cold temperatures, and intense snowfall.
Avalanche When there is too much snow on a mountain and it rushes down the mountain at speeds that can reach 245 mph.
Weather A condition of the atmosphere at a specific time and place.
Climate the average weather over a long period of time.
Thermometer measures how hot or cold the atmosphere is
Barometer measures the weight of a column of air pressing down on an area
Wind Vane Measures the direction the air travels from high to low pressure
Anemometer Measures the wind speed from a high pressure area to a low pressure area.
Hygrometer Measures the amount of water vapor in any given amount of air.
Rain Gauge Measures the amount of precipitation in the atmosphere.
Dew Point The temperature at which the humidity reaches 100%.
Troposphere Layer closest to Earth. Has all weather, clouds, and life.
Stratosphere Second layer of the atmosphere. Contains the Ozone Layer.
Ozone Layer This layer protects us from the bad UV rays from the Sun. Found in another layer.
Mesosphere Layer Third layer of the atmosphere. This is where meteoroids burn up.
Thermosphere Layer Fourth Layer of the atmosphere. This is the hottest layer and it has the lowest air pressure. Also known for containing the Northern Lights.
Exosphere Layer Fifth layer of the atmosphere. This is the closest to outer space and contains satellites.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
