Earths changing surface

TermDefinition
Weathering The process breaks down or apart rock and other things on Earth's surface due to ice, coldness, water, and heat.
Erosion When water, wind, ice or gravity move or blow rock particles away.
Mechanical weathering A different type of weathering when rock is broken into smaller pieces by physically being broken.
Permeable A material that has small connected air spaces that allow water to seep and creep through.
Chemical weathering Is the process that breaks down rocks through chemical changes.
Ice wedging When wedges or chunks of ice widen and deepen in cracks.
Abrasion When wind, gravity, water, or ice carry rock particles that have been grinded by other rocks.
Soil horizon A type/layer of soil that has a different color and texture that the other layers below and above it.
Loam A type of soil that is made up of equal parts of silt, sand, and clay.
Humus The substance that is dark colored and forms when animals and plants remains decayed.
Bedrock They layer of rock underneath the soil that is solid and hard.
Soil The material on Earth’s surface is loose and weathered so plants can grow there.
Decomposer The organisms that break down the remains of dead organisms into smaller pieces and then digests them with chemicals.
Litter A layer on top of every layer that consists of dead leaves and other plant things that forms a loose layer.
Subsoil A layer of soil that consists of clay and other minerals that is beneath the Topsoil.
Topsoil The topmost crumbly layer that is a mixture of clay, humus, and other minerals.
