Terms for bodies as a whole

medial pertaining to the middle or near the medial plane of the body
lateral pertaining to the side
inferior (caudal) below another structure; pertaining to the tail or lower portion of the body
frontal (coronal plane) vertical plane dividing the body or structure into anterior and posterior portions
distal far from the point of attachment to the trunk or far from the beginning of a structure
deep away from the surfuce
anterior (ventral) front surface of the body
disk (disc) pad of cartilage between vertebrae
spinal cord nervous tissue within the spinal cavity
spinal column bone tissue surrounding the spinal cavity
vertebrae backbones
vertebra single backbone
coccygeal region of the coccyx (tailbone)
sacral region of the sacrum (S1 to S5)
lumbar loin (waist) region (L1 t oL5)
thoracic chest region (T1 to T12)
cervical neck region (C1 to C7)
hypogastric middle lower region below the umbilical region
inguinal right and left lower regions near the groin (also called the iliac regions)
umbilical central region near the navel
lumbar right and left middle regions near the waist
epigastric middle upper region above the stomach
hypochondriac right and left upper regions beneath the ribs
ventral (anterior) pertaining to the front
thoracic cavity space in the chest containing the heart, lungs, bronchial tubes, trachea, esophagus, and other organs
spinal cavity space within spinal column (backbones) and containing the spinal cord. Also called the spinal canal
pleural cavity space between pleural membranes
pleura double layed membrane surrounding each lung
peritoneum double layered membrane surrounding the abdominal organs
pelvic cavity space below the abdomen containing portions of intestines, rectum, urinary bladder, and reproductive organs
mediastinum centrally located space between the lungs
dorsal (posterior) pertaining to the back
diaphragm muscle separating the abdominal and thoracic cavities; diaphragm moves up and down and aids in breathing
cranial cavity space in the head containing the brain and surrounded by the skull. Cranial means pertaining to the skull
abdominal cavity space below chest contains organs such as liver, stomach, gall bladder, and intestines; also called abdomen
skin and sense organs system skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, and sebaceous (oil) glands; eye, ear, nose, and throat
musculoskeletal system muscles, bones, and joints
circulatory system heart, blood vessels (arteries, veins, and capillaries), lymphatic vessels and nodes, spleen, thymus gland
nervous system brain, spinal cord, nerves, and collection of nerves
endocrine system thyroid gland (in neck), pituitary gland (base of brain), sex glands (overies and testes), adrenal glands, pancreas (islets of Langerhorns), parathyroid gland
reproductive system-female ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus (womb), vagina, mammary glands
reproductive system - male tetes and associated tubes, urethra, penis, prostate gland
respiratory system nose, pharynx, larynx (voice box), trachea (windpipe), bronchial tubes, lungs
urinary or excretory system organs: kidnesys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra
digestive system organs: mouth, pharym (throat), esophagas, stomach, intestines (small and large), liver, gallbladder, pancreas
