| dissonance | the grating of incompatible songs |
| doggerel | crude, simplistic verse, often in sing-song rhyme |
| elements | the basic techniques of each genre of literature, In short story: Characters, irony, symbol, plot setting. In poetry: figurative language, symbol, imagery, rhythm and rhyme. In drama: conflict,characters, climax, conclusion, ect |
| ellipsis | three periods (...) including the omission of words in thought or quotation |
| eponymous | term for the title character of a work of literature |
| exegesis | a detailed analysis or interpretation of a work of literature |
| expose | piece of writing that reveals weaknesses, faults, frailties or other short comings |
| explicit | to say or write something directly or clearly |
| explication | the interpretation/ analysis of a text |
| harangue | a forceful sermon, lecture or tirade |
| humanism | belief that emphasizes faith and optimism in human potential and creativity |
| implicit | to say or write something that suggest and implies but never says it directly or clearly |
| idyll | a lyric poem or passage that describes a kind of ideal life or place |
| inversion | switching customary order of elements in a sentence or phrase; when done badly it can give a stilted, artificial feel to the verse. |
