Chemistry
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Solid | Has a fixed volume and shape |
| Liquid | Has a fixed volume but not a fixed shape |
| Gas | Does not have a fixed volume or shape |
| Dissolve | When a material mixes completely and appears as just one material. Dissolving substances together causes properties to change but no reaction to occur. |
| Brittleness | Property that describes if a substance can be shaped or not |
| Reflectivity | Describes how much light bounces off a material |
| Hardness | How easily a material can be scratched or dented |
| Color | Looking at color helps to see the differences in materials |
| Solubility | Describes whether a substance can dissolve in another substance |
| Electrical Conductivity | Describes how well a substance allows an electrical current to flow through it. Metal has high electrical conductivity. Plastic covers a power cord because it has low electrical conductivity. |
| Thermal Conductivity | How well a substance allows heat to flow through it. Metal has a high thermal conductivity. |
| Burning | When a new substance burns it changes into a new substance |
| Bubbling | Substances change when they bubble. When two chemicals are poured into a beaker and a fountain of bubbles erupts from the beaker, gas is formed. |
| Rusting | When something rusts it changes from a shapeable substance into a brittle orange substance. |
| State Change | changing from one state to another, which means that it is kept at the same total amount |
