QuestionAnswer
What does binary fission look like?
Describe asexual reproduction. one parent, no union of gametes, offspring genetically identical to parent
What are the products of a normal mitotic cell division? 2 diploid body cells
What type of cell contains homologous pairs of chromosomes? diploid
Draw the stages of mitosis in correct order.
A cell in the stem of a corn plant has 20 chromosomes. How many will each daughter cell have? 20
How does an animal cell end mitosis? pinches in half
How does a plant cell end mitosis? forms a cell plate
What are these organelles? centrioiles
What are A and B? A is chromatid, B is centromere.
What is uncontrolled cell division called? cancer
What are the daughter cells of mitosis like? identical to the parent cells
What did the different tools in the beaks of finches lab represent? feeding adaptations in finches
Explain the relationship of pulse rate to activity level. More activity, faster pulse rate.
If your heart rate increases, what else will increase? pulse rate
The type of food and the type of habitat a finch lives in is described as its... niche
If frog eggs are taken out of a pond and put in saltwater, what will happen Water will leave the eggs.
What type of solution was this cell exposed to? salt
What will it look like once it was rinsed with distilled water for a few minutes? The cytoplasm and cell membrane move back out to the cell wall.
What organ makes insulin? pancreas`
When insulin decreases blood sugar level, the pancreas shuts off the insulin. What is this called? a feedback mechanism
Name a system other than circulatory which would be affected by exercise, and tell how. respiratory system - breathing rate would increase.
What system does pulse rate have to do with? circulatory system
Name 2 internal environmental factors that influence the rate of enzyme action. pH and temp
Explain why changing the shape of an enzyme affects its ability to function. If it changes shape, it won't be able to fit with its substrate.
Identify specialized structures in a cell membrane that are involved in communication. receptors
Why might chemicals released from one plant species not cause a response in a different plant species. The second species might not have the properly shaped receptors.
State one change in the composition of the blood as it flows through the digestive system. It gains more nutrients.
Identify 2 body activities that would change in response to an increase in muscle activity, and tell how each would change. Heart rate - increaseRespiration rate - increase
What is a vaccine? dead or weakened pathogen
What does a vaccine do in the body? stimulates production of antibodies against the pathogen
Why do hormones attach to target cells and not other cells? Other cells don't have the proper shape receptor.
What type of repro results in genetically identical offspring? asexual
Why? only one parent involved. No sex.
How do asexual and sexual repro differ? Sexual involves union of gametes, asexual does not.
Endocrine and nervous systems maintain... homeostasis
Parasites, fungi, bacteria and viruses disrupt homeostasis
Why can some molecules pass through a cell membrane but others cannot? Small molecules can, large cannot.
What happens to a cell in salt water? Draw it. Cytoplasm loses water and shrinks.
How does diffusion end? when the molecules are balanced in concentration.
Why do desert snakes stay underground during the day? So they maintain homeostasis by not overheating.
