Adaptations and Traits
Term | Definition |

Species | A group of organisms with similar characteristics that allow them to reproduce. |
Camouflage | Characteristics that blend in the environment to increase survival. |
Plant Adaptations | Adaptations help plants survive in the environment. -Rainforest trees grow very tall to compete for sunlight. - Desert cactus have thick waxy skin to prevent water loss. |
Migration | The seasonal movement of animals from one place to another. |
Hibernate | When an animal becomes still in an enclosed space and reduces bodily function to save energy. |
Mimicry | The resemblance of an organism to another organism or to it surroundings that gives it a better chance of survival. |
Adaptation | Any characteristic that helps a plant or animal survive in a specific environment. |
Feet Adaptations | *Webbed feet help swimmers catch food or escape. *Hoofed animals can run faster on prairies. |
Mouth Adaptations | *Sharp teeth tear meat *Flat teeth grind grasses *Short beaks break nuts *Long beaks catch fish |
Limb Adaptations | - Strong hind legs allow Jack Rabbit to hop quickly away from predators. - Flippers allow penguins to balance and swim rapidly in water to catch food or to escape predators. |
Habitat | The place or environment in which an organism naturally lives. |
Niche | The role an organism plays in its environment. Includes the plants ,animals, and other living things an organism interacts with. (all the parts of an organism's life) |
Temperature Adaptations | -Snow geese migrate south to warmer temperatures -Black bear slows down body functions during winter hibernation. |
Defense Adaptations | Camouflage*Green lizard hides among plants Mimicry*Insect looks like a leaf to hide Appear Big* Cats arches back to look bigger |
