Star Groups / Constellations

TermDefinition
Constellations Star groups which form star patterns or regions.
Ursa Major The Great Bear
Ursa Minor The Little bear. Also known as the little dipper. Has Polaris (North Star) at tip of its tail.
Big Dipper Constellation found in the hips and tail of Ursa Major.
Draco The dragon. Found wrapping around the Big Dipper.
Hercules Roman mythological hero. 5th largest of modern constellations.
Polaris North Star!! Found at the tail tip of the Little Dipper.
Sirius The brightest star in our sky based upon apparent magnitude. Found in the constellation Canis Major.
Canis Major The Big Dog constellation.
Pleiades The Seven Sister Stars!! Found in the heart region of the constellation Taurus.
Cassiopeia The Beautiful Queen!! Viewed in the northern sky as a "W" or an "M" depending upon the time of night.
Cepheus King of Ethiopia!! This constellation is said to be the husband of Cassiopeia.
Cygnus The Swan!! This constellation is also know as The Northern Cross. In the sky it appears to fly away from Cassiopeia.
Bootes The Herdsman (Shepherd). This constellation is recognized by it's kite shape.
Orion The Hunter!! Recognized by it's bright 3 star belt. He hunts Taurus the Bull.
Taurus The Bull!! Circumpolar constellation facing Orion. Has 3 stars forming a triangle.
Galaxies Major star components of the universe. Contain 100 Billion stars.
Milky Way The galaxy in which our Sun is located.
Nebula Clouds of gas and dust found in space.
Local Group The name for the 18 galaxies in which the Milky Way galaxy is found.
