Vocabulary Practice

TermDefinition
DNA Replication The process that involves DNA being copied
Codon A sequence of 3 nucleotide bases located on the mRNA
Anticodon A sequence of 3 nucleotide bases located on the tRNA that is complimentary to the mRNA
Watson and Crick scientists who were given credit for the discovery and creation of a model of DNA
Central Dogma States that the order of protein synthesis occurs in the following DNA --> RNA --> Protein
DNA Polymerase The enzyme that is required for DNA replication and builds the new daughter strands that are complimentary to the parent strands
RNA Poylmerase The enzyme required for transcription that builds and assembles the mRNA strand from the DNA template.
Chargaff's Rule discovered that in DNA there is always an equal amount of Adenine to Thymine and the amount of Cytosine to Guanine and gave rise to the Base Pair Rule A-T and C-G.
mRNA carries the code from the nucleus to the ribosome
rRNA type of RNA that is found in ribosomes and helps assist in translation
tRNA a type of RNA that transfers an amino acid that correlates with the codon during translation
Start codon a sequence of bases that signals the start of protein synthesis which is AUG and codes for the amino acid Methionine
DNA Deoxyribonucleic Acid Made of nucleotides that contains deoxyribose sugar contains A,C,T,G Double stranded Stays in the nucleus
RNA Ribonucleic Acid Made of nucleotides that contains ribose sugar Single stranded Contains the bases A, C, G and U is small in size and can travel out of the nucleus
Transcription The process of converting a sequence of DNA to mRNA
Translation The process of converting a strand of mRNA to a polypeptide protein
Rosalind Franklin The scientists that provided the first actual image of DNA using X-Ray crystallography which helped to determine the shape of DNA as a double helix
Helicase The enzyme that is responsible for unzipping DNA double strands during DNA replication
Sugar-Phosphate Backbone is made of deoxyribose and phosphate groups covalently bonded together to form the "sides" of the DNA "ladder"
Hydrogen bonds The type of bonds that form between the nitrogen bases and forms the "steps" of the DNA "ladder"
Protein Synthesis The process of making proteins by joining amino acids together with a peptide bond.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
