Key vocabulary for the first case study in Exploring Life Science

TermDefinition
Adaptation a trait that improves an organism's ability to survive in its environment; trait can be structural, physiological or behavioral
Survival continuing to live or exist
Ecosystem biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment; "eco-" =environment; system=different things working together
Native (Indigenous) belonging to a particular place
Species group of organisms that consist of similar individuals capable of interbreeding or mating
Habitat provides the organisms that live there with food, water, shelter and space to survive
Shelter something that provides cover or protection, as from weather or danger; place of refuge; home for animal
Herbivore an animal that feeds ONLY on plants
Population group or type of people or animals living in an area or country
Experimental group the group that tests or changes something to see what happens
Control group the group that stays the same or doesn't get any special treatment
Homeostasis a self-regulating process by which a living organism can maintain internal stability while adjusting to changing external conditions
Invasive anything that goes or grows where you don't want it to; if species it is not native, it overpopulates, and harms the environment
