Earth Systems

TermDefinition
Weathering a process that breaks down rock and boulders into tiny pieces. It is caused by plants, animals, strong weather or chemical changes in the air.
Erosion a process that moves soil and tiny rocks away from one place (because of gravity, water or wind)
Deposition the placing of broken down materials such as rocks, sand or soil in a new place (carried by wind, water and ice)
Sediments broken down material from earth (rocks, sand and soil); often carried away by wind, water, or gravity and settles in a new location
Geosphere solid and molten rock, soil and sediments (ex. mountains, continents)
Hydrosphere water and ice (ex. glaciers, rivers, lakes and oceans)
Atmosphere air (ex. wind, oxygen, air in the sky)
Biosphere all living things (ex. humans, plants, animals)
Troposphere 1. closest to Earth; air we breathe; clouds are here
Stratosphere 2nd closest layer to Earth
Mesosphere 3rd closest layer to Earth. air is too thin to breathe; meteors found here
Thermosphere 4th closest layer to Earth; where satellites move
Exosphere the outside layer of the atmosphere
Where is a majority of water on Earth located? In oceans as saltwater.
Percentage of water in ice and glaciers 70%
Percentage of water as groundwater About 30%
Percentage of water as rivers, lakes and streams Less than 1%
Evaporation Interaction between hydrosphere and atmosphere (Water turns to water vapor as a result of the temperature rising which is a change in the atmosphere)
Condensation: Interaction between hydrosphere and atmosphere (water vapor turns to water droplets and combine to form clouds- temperature decreases)
Precipitation: Interaction between hydrosphere and atmosphere (water droplets are heavy enough to fall and the temperature determines their form).
Run Off Interaction between hydrosphere and geosphere Once the water hits the ground, it travels to lower ground. Run off is the draining of water. The force of the water flow can erode, or break down, the ground.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
