heredity the passing of genetic traits from parent to offspring.
dominant allele An allele whose trait always shows up in the organism when the allele is present.
recessive allele An allele whose trait only shows up when no dominant allele is present.
gene one set of instructions for an inherited trait
allele one of the alternative forms of a gene that governs a characteristic, such as hair color
phenotype an organism's appearance or other detectable characteristic
genotype what the genes are - the letters
probability the chances of something happening
homozygous having two of the same genes for the trait (sometimes called purebred).
heterozygous having two different genes for a trait (sometimes called hybrid).
Gregor Mendel father of genetics
Protein Complex molecules which make up structures and carry out functions of an organism. MADE IN THE RIBOSOMES!
trait A characteristic that an organism can pass on to its offspring through its genes
DNA Complex molecule that carries genetic information that defines an organism's traits. (found in the nucelus)
chromosome A single piece of coiled DNA found in the cells; contains genes that encode traits. YOU HAVE 23 PAIRS OF THESE
Punnett Square a special chart used to show or predict the possible gene combinations in a cross between two organisms for a given trait.
