What are arboviral diseases? Infections caused by a group pf viruses that are transmitted through a bite.
What is a pest? Any organism, animal, or plant that adversely affects our health. Can also include bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
What is zoonosis? An infectious disease in animals that can be transmitted to people.
At what stage of development are mosquitoes effectively eliminated? At the larvae stage.
What is the benefit of serveillance? Monitor mosquito disease activity.
List 3 problems caused by pests? Causes discomfort, vectors of disease, resource competition
What diseases are caused by lice? Typhus Fever and Trench Fever; Caused by people living in crowded conditions and can spread rapidly especially in homeless communities, refugee and victims of war communities, and after a natural disaster
What are mites? Anthropoids, close relative to spiders. Mites live on everything and eat dead skin.
Where can you find mites? On fecal matter The remains of dead mites are source of allergens They are a source of scabies
Technology cannot solve environmental problems alone, what else is needed? Education, Inspection, and Surveillance
What is the most serious and costly of all insect-borne diseases? Malaria
On what scale is malaria the most concerning? On a GLOBAL scale
On what scale is West Nile virus the most concerning? On a NATIONAL scale
What are the most common diseases caused by mosquitoes? Malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, and West Nile Virus
List 3 diseases caused by flies? Typhoid fever, cholera, dysentery
What pest can trigger asthma attacks? Cockroaches
What disease are rat fleas most known for causing? The Plague
What are the most common diseases caused by ticks? Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Lyme disease
Do bed bugs cause disease? No, but they lead to secondary infection.
What are bed bugs attracted to? Carbon dioxide
What spider bite can cause tissue death in the vicinity of the wound? The Brown Recluse spider
What pest is identified by the violin-shaped marking on its back? The Brown Recluse spider
What pest is responsible for more human deaths than any other insect? Mosquitoes
Why do only female mosquitoes bite? For the development of eggs
What over the counter pesticide is recommended for mosquitoes? The chemical DEET
List 4 breeding sites for mosquitoes. Standing water, storm drains, bird baths, and house gutters
What group of people have the largest concern when it comes to Zika virus? Pregnant women
What does Zika virus cause? Microcephaly
Where does the asian tiger mosquito breed? In tires! They were brought to the U.S. in 1980s through automobile tires from Japan.
Explain why when spraying for roaches, you can still find them a week later. Spraying does not kill the egg casings, it only kills the adult roaches
What disease is transmitted by the rat flea? Plague
Explain the relationship between pest and global warming. The warmer it is, the longer the pest stay alive. Warm weather increases the ranges of disease vectors.
List 3 types of plant pests. Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, and Poison Sumac
List 3 vectors of rabies Raccoons, Skunks, and Foxes
What is the best way to remove ticks? With tweezers
Who is Paul Muller? Discovered DDT for control of household pests. DDT is considered a broad spectrum persistent pesticide because it remains for years.
What are the types of pesticides? Insecticide, Herbicide, Rodenticide, Nemacides.
What is a broad spectrum pesticide? Remains in the environment for years after usage.
What was the selective herbicide used during the Vietnam War? Agent Orange
List the 2 types of rats. The Norway rat and the Roof rat
What is Hanta virus? Transmitted by the deer mouse. Caused by aerosolized dried droppings. It is present in their urine, saliva, and feces
What is known for spreading the Rocky Mountain spotted fever? American dog tick
What kind of tick spreads Lyme disease? The Black legged tick
How can you spot Lyme disease? Can be seen by the associated bull's eye or target shaped rash
What is a limitation to using pesticides? Generations can develop resistance
What can be used to avoid pesticide resistance? Integrated Pest Managment Techniques
What are the 3 types of insecticides and how do they kill? 1. Stomach poison - works on insects that bite/chew 2. Contact poison - penetrates through the skin (exoskeleton) 3. Fumigants - via their respiratory system
List 3 benefits of pesticides. 1. Increases crop production 2. Preserves produce 3. Cheaper for farmers
List 3 groups that are at risk of pesticidal poisoning. 1. Pet groomers 2. Migrant workers 3. Recreational workers?
List environmental impacts of pesticide use. 1. Develop resistance 2. Secondary pest outbreak 3. Groundwater contamination 4. Biomagnification
What is biomagnification? Specific to DDT most of the time When a chemical moves up the food chain, becoming magnified in the systems of top predators
Is DDT considered a "broad spectrum pesticide?" Yes
What are secondary pest outbreaks? When you use a pesticide to kill a target organism and end up killing a nontarget beneficial organism.
Who is Rachel Carson? Wrote the book Silent Spring
What was "Silent Spring" about? Dealt with the misuse and overuse of DDT. Awoke American to the fact that harmful chemicals were being sprayed on crops.
What are the components of Integrated Pest Managment? Eliminating the food supply, water supply, and where they hide
List 4 alternatives to chemical pest control. Integrated pest management, natural enemies, pathogens & parasites, Sex Attractants
What are some organisms used in organic pest control? Praying mantis', ladybugs, and goats
Why are goats a good method of organic pest control? Eliminated plant based invasive species
