Term | Definition |
---|---|
Raw material | It is a natural resource, directly taken from the environment. |
Material | It is a raw material that has been transformed by physical o chemical processes. |
Manufactured product | An object ready to use and satisfy human needs made with one or more materials. |
Electrical conductivity | Physical electrical property of materials that allow the electrical current to pass through them. |
Electrical insulation | Physical electrical property of materials that DON´T allow the electrical current to pass through them. |
Thermal conductivity | Physical thermal property of materials that allow heat to pass through them. |
Thermal insulation | Physical thermal property of materials that DON´T allow heat to pass through them. |
Expansion | Physical thermal property of materials that when the temperature increases, get bigger. |
Contraction | Physical thermal property of materials that when the temperature decreases, get smaller. |
Fusibility | Physical thermal property of materials that change from solid to liquid when temperature is increased. |
Welding | Physical thermal property of materials that consists of joining two pieces of metal using heat. |
Transparent | Physical optical property of materials that allow light to pass through them, objects behind them can be seen clearly. |
Translucent | Physical optical property of materials that allow light to pass through them, but don´t allow objects behind them to be seen clearly. |
Opaque | Physical optical property of materials that don´t allow light to pass through them, objects cannot be seen through these materials. |
Acoustic conductor | Physical acoustic property of materials that allow sound to pass through them. |
Acoustic insulator | Physical acoustic property of materials that DON´T allow sound to pass through them. |
Magnetism | Physical magnetic property of materials that attract metallic things. |
Elasticity | Physical mechanical property of materials that allows the material to return to its original form after a force that has changed its shape is removed. |
Plasticity | Physical mechanical property of materials that allows them to be permanently deformed after a force has changed its shape. |
Malleability | Physical mechanical property of materials that allows a material to be spread into films or sheets. |
Ductility | Physical mechanical property of materials that allows a material to be formed into filaments or wires. |
Mechanical strength | Physical mechanical property of materials that makes them suffer a deformation when a force act upon them. |
Hardness | Physical mechanical property of materials that are not easily scratched by another material. |
Toughness | Physical mechanical property of materials that do not break when they are hitten by something. |
Brittleness | Physical mechanical property of materials that break easily. |
Density | Physical property of materials that indicates the relationship between the mass and the volume of an object. |
Porosity | Physical property of materials that can absorb or release liquids or gases. |
Permeability | Physical property of materials that allow liquids to filter through them. |
Impermeability | Physical property of materials that DON´T allow liquids to filter through them (waterproof material). |
Oxidation | Chemical property of materials that react with oxygen in the air or water producing rust. |
Recyclable | Ecological property of materials that can be reused. |
Toxic | Ecological property of materials that are harmful to the environment. |
Biodegradable | Ecological property of materials that decompose naturally. |
Renewable | Ecological property of materials that can be regenerated in a short period of time. |
Non-renewable | Ecological property of materials that cannot be regenerated in a short period of time. |
