TermDefinition
Biotic living organisms that are part of an environment.
Abiotic non-living factors in an environment such as temperature, light, water, and nutrients
Ecosystems made up of the interaction of all living organisms (like animals, plants, and bugs) in an area with all of the non-living organisms (like water, dirt, rocks, and the sun).
Habitat the home of an animal or a plant
organism any living thing
population the number of people living in a certain place.
communithy a place where people live, work, and play.
biosphere made up of all the living things on Earth
producers create, or produce, goods and provide services
consumer the people who buy goods and services
decomposer a living thing that breaks down dead plants, animals or waste
herbivore an organism that feeds mostly on plants.
carnivore n organism that mostly eats meat, or the flesh of animals
omnivore an organism that mostly eats meat, or the flesh of animals.
scavenger organism that eats dead or rotting biomass, such as animal flesh or plant material.
prey an animal that kills and eats other animals
predator an animal that is hunted by another for food
niche the role a species plays in the ecosystem
Biome a large region with a certain climate and certain types of living things.
Terrestrial Ecosystem ones that are found on land, like forests, grasslands, deserts, shorelines, and wetlands.
Deciduous Forest a type of forest dominated by trees that lose their foliage at the end of the growing season
Grassland Large areas covered with grasses
Rainforest a tall, dense forest that receives lots of rain every year.
Desert a place that has very little rainfall.
Aquatic ecosystem the habitat for water-dependent living species including animals, plants, and microbes.
freshwater water found in ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, glaciers, icebergs, ice caps and sheets
pond small bodies of still, or not moving, fresh water that are surrounded by land.
lake an inland body of water surrounded by land
river/streams a tiny trickle of water on high ground
