Tissues and Integumentary System

tissue a group of similar cells with a common function
histology study of tissues
4 major types of tissues in the body Epithelial tissue, Connective tissue, Muscle tissue, Nervous tissue
characteristics of epithelial tissue -function: Protection, secretion, absorption, excretion -location: Cover body surface, cover and line internal organs, compose glands -characteristics: lack blood vessels, cells readily divide, cells are tightly packed
characteristics of connective tissue -function: Bind, support, protect, fill spaces, store fat, produce blood cells -location: Widely distributed throughout the body -characteristics: have good blood supply, cells are farther than epithelial cells, extracellular matrix in between
characteristics of muscle tissue -function: movement -location: attached to bones, in the walls of hollow internal organs, heart -characteristics: able to contract in response to specific stimuli
characteristics of nervous tissue -function: Conduct impulses for coordination, regulation, integration, and sensory reception -location: Brain, spinal cord, nerves -characteristics: cells communicate with each other and other body parts
3 types of Intercellular Junctions tight junctions, desmosomes, gap junction
tight junctions close space between cells by fusing cell membranes -ex: cells that line the small intestine
desmosomes bind cells by forming “spot welds” between cell membranes -ex: cells of the outer skin layer
gap junction form tubular channels between cells that allow exchange of substances -ex: muscle cells of the heart and digestive tract
general characteristics of Epithelial tissues -Cover organs and body surface -Line cavities and hollow organs -Make up glands -Have a free surface on outside, and basement membrane on inside -Lack blood vessels (avascular), and nutrients diffuse to epithelial tissue from underlying connective ti

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
