TermDefinition
ecosystem All the living and nonliving things in an area and their interactions.
consumer An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms.
producer An organism that uses energy from the sun to create its own food (green plants).
decomposer An organism that breaks down wastes and dead organisms and returns their nutrients to the soil.
predator An animal that hunts other animals for food.
prey An animal that is killed and eaten by another animal.
food chain A series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy.
herbivore A consumer that eats only plants.
carnivore A consumer that eats only animals.
omnivore A consumer that eats both plants and animals.
