TermDefinition
ecosystem All the living and nonliving things in an area and their interactions.
consumer An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms.
producer An organism that uses energy from the sun to create its own food (green plants).
decomposer An organism that breaks down wastes and dead organisms and returns their nutrients to the soil.
population A group of the same type of species/organism living in a particular area.
community All the different populations that live together in an area.
habitat A physical/natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organism.
food chain A series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy.
food web A system of interlocking and interdependent food chains.
herbivore A consumer that eats only plants.
carnivore A consumer that eats only animals.
omnivore A consumer that eats both plants and animals.
competition The fight for resources
terrestrial Land
aquatic Water
over population When the number of people in an area exceeds the capacity of the environment to support life
dependent Relying on someone or something else for support.
dormancy A period when an organism's growth or activity slows.
hibernation The deep, sleep-like state that an animal enters for most of the winter.
migration To move from one place to another to search for food, water or different temperatures.
