Earth Science Study

5th Grade- Earth in Space & Earth's Systems

TermDefinition
Venus Terrestrial planet that is 2nd from the sun. Similar to Earth in size & composition. Very hot planet.
Jupiter Gas giant, 5th planet from the sun. Biggest planet in our solar system.
Terrestrial Planets Planets made of mostly rocks and metals. They have solid surfaces and can have volcanoes, mountains and craters.
In terms of weather and temperature, which areas on Earth will change temperature faster or slower? Land/sand/rock will heat up and cool down at faster rates than large bodies of water.
Mars 4th planet from the sun, can not support life as it has no atmosphere. Known as the red planet due to iron oxide causing rust. Has 2 moons.
How do waves change the beach? The waves deposit and was away the sand.
Polar Climate Zone Almost always covered with snow and have extremely cold temperatures. The temperature rarely rises above the freezing point. Farthest from the equator.
Tropical Climate Zone Constant high temperatures, closest to the equator. Lots of rain and humidity.
Weather The state of the atmosphere in a specific area. Changes frequently or quickly.
Climate The average temperature and weather of a large region. Determined by the distance from the equator (latitude).
Evaporation The water vapor(gas) that rises after the sun has heated the air above a body of water. This eventually turns to condensation in clouds.
Condesation After evaporation (gas) rises in the air, the water vapor reaches cooler temps higher in the sky causing it to condense back into a liquid forming clouds.
the Sun the star that is the center of our solar system, has immense gravity that keeps planets orbiting around us. It is the closest star to Earth and that is why it is so bright. This star also supports life & powers water cycle on Earth.
How to prevent damage to home during hurricane? Removing trees that could fall on the roof.
Wind is created when air moves from areas of high pressure to low pressure, carries warm air from the equator and carries moist air over water to land.
Nonrenewable Resources Cannot replenish or replenish VERY slowly. Examples used for energy are natural gas and coal.
Inner Planets Mercury, Venus, Earth & Mars. Closest to the sun and made of mostly rock.
Water Cycle The continuous movement of water within the Earth and atmosphere, powered by the sun & mostly supplied by the oceans. Liquid water evaporates into water vapor, condenses to form clouds, and precipitates back to earth in the form of rain and snow.
Porperties of Minerals color, texture, luster, hardness
Barometric Pressure Air pressure in the Earth's atmosphere. High pressure = clear sunny skies. Low pressure = clouds form, eventually leading to precipitation. Over the ocean low pressure can spawn a hurricane.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
