Solar System
5th Grade: planets & components of our galaxy
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Our Solar System | Found in the Milky Way Galaxy, includes one star (the sun), planets, moons, comets, asteroids and meteors. Our solar system is about 4.6 billion years old. |
the Sun | The star that is the center of our solar system. Planets, comets, & asteroids orbit the sun due to its strong gravity. The sun provides energy to life & systems on Earth. |
Mercury | 1st from the sun (inner planet), 1 day on Mercury is 176 Earth days. Mercury is the smallest planet. It has no moons. Mercury also has no atmosphere. |
Venus | 2nd planet from the Sun (inner planet). 1 day on Venus is 243 Earth days. It is the hottest planet. It has no moons. |
Earth | 3rd planet from the Sun (inner planet). Only planet in our solar system with life. Home to over 10 million species. Earth has one moon. |
the Moon | Earth's only natural satellite. Earth's moons causes ocean tides. |
Mars | 4th planet from the Sun (inner planet). One day on Mars is 26 Earth Hours. Known as the red planet due to iron oxide creating rust. Mars has 2 moons, volcanoes & polar ice caps. |
Jupiter | Gas giant that is the 5th planet from the Sun (outer planet). One day on Jupiter is about 10 Earth hours. Jupiter has a big red spot which is a storm & has at least 67 moons. |
Saturn | Gas giant that is the 6th planet from the sun (outer planet). One day on Saturn is 10 Earth hours. Saturn has at least 62 moons and rings made of icy rocks & dust. |
Uranus | Ice giant that is the 7th planet from the sun (outer planet). One day on Uranus is about 18 Earth hours. Blue-green in color due to large amounts of methane. Has about 27 moons. |
Neptune | Ice giant that is the 8th planet from the sun. One day on Neptune is 16 Earth hours. Has 14 known moons. |
Terrestrial Planets | Planets that are made mostly of rocks and metal. They are Earth-like with solid surfaces, molten, and may have craters, volcanoes, and mountains. Mercury, Venus, Earth & Mars are terrestrial planets. |
Dwarf Planets | A dwarf planet is mostly a round rocky body which orbits the sun. It is not big enough to be considered a planet. Examples are Pluto, Ceres & Eric. |
Asteroids | Millions of asteroids exist, mostly between Mars and Jupiter. Asteroids are irregular shaped bodies made of mostly rock and metal which orbit the sun. |
Comets | A comet is a body made of ice, dust, and rock that orbits the sun. |
