Lunar Cycle

TermDefinition
Lunar Cycle A 29.5 day cycle where the Moon revolves around the Earth.
Waxing Crescent A sliver of light is visible on the right side of the Moon.
First Quarter The right half of the Moon is illuminated (lit up).
Waxing Gibbous The right side of the Moon is almost completely illuminated (lit up). A sliver of darkness is on the left side of the Moon.
Full Moon The side of the Moon that we can see is completely illuminated (lit up). The Earth is between the Moon and the Sun.
Waning Gibbous The left side of the Moon is almost completely illuminated (lit up). A sliver of darkness is on the right side of the Moon.
Third or Last Quarter The left half of the Moon is illuminated (lit up).
Waning Crescent A sliver of light is visible on the left side of the Moon.
New Moon No part of the Moon is visible to people on Earth. The Moon is directly in between the Sun and Earth.
