| Syllabic | A text setting of Gregorian chant in which almost every syllable has a note |
| Neumatic | A text setting of Gregorian chant in which syllables carry one to six notes |
| Melismatic | A text setting of Gregorian chant which includes long melodic passages on a single syllable |
