|---|---|
| 3 Conditions for Evolution by Natural Selection | Phenotypic variation must exist within the population, the variation must lead to differences among individuals, and the differences must be hereditary. |
| Artificial Selection | Genetic change initiated by humans for favorable traits |
| Rock Fossil Causation | 1. Organism buried in sediment 2. Calcium/Other hard tissue mineralizes 3. Surrounding sediment hardens into rock |
| Isotope Dating | Uses either Potassium-40 or Carbon-14, uses the half life of these samples to determine the age of rock |
| Evolutionary Transitions | Somewhat clear instances of a middle ground between one species and another |
| Anatomical Similarities | Animals sharing a common structure but utilizing them in vastly different manners |
| Anatomical Imperfections | Faulty traits inherited from a common ancestor that never had the capacity to change (ex: giraffes with only 7 neck vertebrae) |
| Vestigial Structures | Structures left over on an organism that have lost function and serve little to no purpose |
| Psuedogenes | Leftover genes that have become deactivated, points to an ancestor that once had said traits |
| Biogeography | Study of geographic distribution of species |
| Convergent Evolution | Similar traits arising in mostly unrelated organisms independently |
