Carbon + Water Cycle

Carbon And Water Cycle

QuestionAnswer
What contains carbon all living things contain carbon your body is made up of 20% carbon by mass your body is constantly "burning" compounds of carbon to keep you alive in a process called respiration you exhale carbon dioxide
How is Carbon Dioxide added to the atmosphere Respiration Burning of fossil fuels Natural processes e.g. volcanoes, forest fires and decay of dead animals and plants
How is carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere Plants via photosynthesis Rain -when rain falls through the atmosphere it reacts with carbon dioxide to form carbonic acid Lakes and seas
How is carbon Stored underground Limestone (calcium carbonate) Oil and Gas Coal Turf
What is a problem with the carbon cycle today we are adding too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, this is causing an increase in overall temperature due to it trapping the Earth's heat. This leads to rising sea levels, unpredictable weather and climate change
Irish efforts to reduce Global Warming Carbon Tax Subsiding production of green energy
What processes add water to the atmosphere Evaporation from seas, Lakes and land using the sun as a source of energy Transpiration from trees and plants to help them cool down Combustion
What is evaporation Evaporation is the change of state of a liquid to a gas at the surface of a liquid
What is Transpiration Transpiration is the release of water from the leaves of trees and plants
How does Combustion produce water Water vapour is produced as a by-product of burning gas, petrol or oil
What happens to the water vapour as it enters the atmosphere as the water vapour rises, it cools and condenses The water vapour is converted to a cloud Some clouds may be blown by wind over land as it moves over land it may be blown higher over mountains and cool further
What happens to the cloud Clouds Cool Further the cloud can no longer hold onto the water droplets and the water falls as rain, hail, sleet or snow This is known as precipitation
What happens to the water when it reaches land Most water makes it back to the sea eventually -water collects in streams, lakes and rivers (runoff)
What happens to the water back at sea We can harness some of the sea water returning to sea -Hydroelectricity dams can trap the water and convert it's potential energy into electrical energy in a generator Some water is also routed to homes and industry for consumption

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
