Habitat Study

Habitat Study + Ecological Relationships

QuestionAnswer
What is ecology? Is the study of the interaction between organisms and their environment (physical surroundings)
Why is ecology important? It provides us with evidence of interdependence between the natural world and people Gives people a way to monitor the effect of industrial development on local habitats
What is a habitat? A habitat is the place where a plant or animal lives An organism’s habitat should provide them with all the resources they need to survive, e.g. food, shelter, water, light etc.
What is a population? Members of the same species that live in an area is known as a population
What is a community? A community is all the plants and animals that live in a particular habitat and share the resources in that habitat Within a community, organisms have their own unique ecological niche
What is an ecological niche? An ecological niche is a species role in a community, how it fits in and how it interacts with other organisms
Why study a habitat? Habitat loss and damage are by far the greatest causes of extinction in species Help us understand how different animals and plants are adapted to their habitat Help us identify factors that can lead to harmful changes in a habitat
what is Adaptation Adaptation is the way an organism is suited to survive its environment If an organism is adapted to its environment it will survive If an organism is not adapted to its environment it will not survive and it will not reproduce fertile young
What Is Competition Competition is where members of the same species or members of different species compete for resources that are in short supply Plants may compete for light, water and space Animals may compete for food, shelter, mates and territory
Example of competition in Ireland The red squirrel is a native species in Ireland The grey squirrel was introduced in 1911 Both of these squirrels compete for the same resources The grey squirrel is stronger and tends to win the resources Red squirrels dissapear within 20 years
what is Interdependence Interdependence is the way one organism is dependent on another Interdependence includes how organisms are dependent on each other for food and energy
What is a food chain A food chain shows how energy is passed from one organism to another
What is a food web A food web shows a number of interconnecting food chains
How is every Animal on the food chain interdependent on the producer If the producer at the beginning of the food chain dies off, the rest of the organisms are in danger of dying off due to lack of food
How are animals interdependent on plants Animals depend on plants either directly (eat plants) or indirectly (eat animals that eat plants)
How are plants interdependent on animals Plants depend on animals for pollination
How is the control of one population dependent on the control of another population The control of one population is dependent on another population of organisms (e.g. foxes and rabbits)
What are producers Producers are organisms that make their own food Plants are described as producers
What are consumers Consumers are organisms (most animals) that feed on other organisms for their food
What animal are known as predators Animals that hunt, catch and eat other animals are known as predators
What animals are known as prey Animals that are hunted, caught and eaten are known as prey
herbivores Some consumers eat plants
carnivores Some consumers eat other animals
omnivores Some consumers eat both plants and animals
What are Decomposers Decomposers are organisms that break down dead plants and animals into materials that go back into the soil Decomposers in grassland include earthworms, beetles, woodlice, bacteria and fungi

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
