Cell Division

Ellie Pasqualini - DNA - RNA

QuestionAnswer
What is DNA? Genetic information found in the nucleus that codes for specific traits.
How many chromosomes are present in a human sex cell? 23
How many chromosomes are present in a human body cell? 46
What is found inside the nucleus that controls all cell activities? DNA
What is the set of instructions for each characteristic that are donated by the parent to the offspring called? (a section of DNA) Genes
When cells are not dividing, what stage of the cell cycle are the cells in? Interphase
What are two functions of chromosomes? determine traits and carry out cell processes and cellular respiration
In a DNA molecule, what bases pair together? A=T - C=G
In a DNA strand, what are the sides of the” ladder” made of? sugars and phosphates
In a DNA strand, what are the rungs of the "ladder” made of? bases
What would be the complementary strand to this DNA sequence: GCTATGCA? CGATACGT
How is RNA different from DNA? 1. RNA has ribose sugar, DNA has deoxyribose 2. DNA has thymine, RNA has uracil 3. RNA is single stranded, DNA is double stranded
What is the purpose of meiosis? To make sex cells
Why type of cell division do gametes undergo? Meiosis
What is the purpose of mitosis? to replace damaged or dead cells
What are the 4 steps of mitosis? 1. anaphase 2. prophase 3. metaphase 4. telophase
How are sex cells different from other human cells? half the number of chromosomes in sex cells
Why do cells need to produce new cells? to replace damaged or dead cells
Genes are located on.... Chromosomes
What happens during Metaphase the chromosomes line up in the middle
What happens during Prophase the chromatin becomes chromosomes and the nucleus starts to go away
What happens during Anaphase the chromatids pull apart
What happens during Telophase there are two new nuclei that start to form
How is asexual reproduction important to humans? mitosis is how cells make new cells through asexual reproduction
What acts like magnets to hold the two sides of DNA together? hydrogen bonds
What type of sugar makes up RNA? Ribose
What type of sugar makes up DNA? deoxyribose
What do the terms haploid and diploid mean? Haploid means half, Diploid means full set
What is the order of the cell cycle? Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, Cytokinesis
Before the cell divides, what must happen? double the DNA

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
