QuestionAnswer
Atom The smallest particle of an element; made of electrons, protons, and neutrons
Bulk Quantities Large amounts
Carbon A naturally occurring element of Earth; an essential building block of organic compounds
Carbon Dioxide A gas that is a natural component of the atmosphere; produced by cells during cellular respiration and used by plants and other organisms for photosynthesis
Cellular Respiration The process of obtaining energy from the breaking of chemical bonds in nutrients
Chemical Change A change that involves one substance being pulled apart or combined with another substance to form a completely different substance or substances
Chemical Equation Chemical formulas and symbols written to represent a reaction
Chemical Formula A shorthand notation that uses chemical symbols and numbers as subscripts to represent the type and number of atoms that are present in the smallest unit of a substance
Chemical Process Method or means of changing one or more chemicals or chemical compounds
Chemical Property A characteristic that can be observed or measured only when atoms rearrange during a chemical change
Chemical Reaction The process by which one or more substances change to produce on or more different substances
Chloroplast A membrane-bound organelle in plants that is the site of photosynthesis
Coefficient A number placed in front of a chemical symbol or formula that represents the number of molecules
Compound A new substance with unique chemical and physical properties formed when two or more elements are chemically bonded during a chemical reaction
Conservation of Matter The law that says matter is neither created nor destroyed in ordinary chemical or physical processes
Conserve To prevent the loss of something
Cycle A repeated sequence of events
Endothermic Reaction A chemical reaction in which heat is absorbed
Energy The ability of a system to do work; required for changes to happen within a system
Exothermic Reaction A chemical reaction in which heat is released
Glucose A sugar composed of six carbon atoms that is the preferred energy source for most cells; produced by photosynthesis
Igneous Rock Rock formed when lava or magma cools, forms crystals, and solidifies
Law of Conservation of Matter Scientific law stating that the mass of all reactants must equal the mass of all products; matter is neither created nor destroyed
Mass A measure of how much matter is present in a substance
Matter Anything that has volume and mass
Matter Cycle The movement of elements or molecules through a repeated sequence of events
Metamorphic Rock Rock formed deep underground due to heat and pressure
Microorganism An organism that is too small to be seen with the naked eye
Molecule The simplest unit of a chemical compound that can exist, formed when two or more atoms join together chemically
Oxygen A gas produced by plants during photosynthesis that animals use for respiration
Photosynthesis A chemical reaction during which plants convert radiant energy from the Sun to chemical energy; the reaction converts carbon dioxide and water into sugar (glucose) and oxygen
Physical Change A change to a substance that occurs without forming a new substance, such as a change in size or state of matter
Physical Property A characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the substance
Phytoplankton Microscopic plants that live in aquatic environments and perform photosynthesis
Precipitate An insoluble solid formed from a chemical reaction
Product A substance produced during a chemical reaction
Properties Physical and chemical characteristics of matter used to describe or identify a substance
Pure Substance A single substance, either an element or a compound, with definite composition and properties
Reactant A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a chemical reaction
Rock Cycle The cycle through which Earth’s rocks change from one type into another over time due to various Earth processes; creates changes in mineral compositions and physical structures
Sedimentary Rock Rock formed when particles of other rocks are deposited in layers and cemented together
Subscript A number written below and to the right of a chemical symbol that shows the number of a specific type of atom present
Synthetic Materials Materials made from one or more natural substances that undergo a chemical process
System A group of interacting, interrelated, or interdependent elements forming a complex whole
Thermal Energy The total kinetic (motion) energy of the tiny particles that make up matter; the faster the particles move, the warmer the matter becomes

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
