Greenhouse effect Warming of the earth when the atmosphere traps thermal energy from the sun
Hydrosphere is all the water on and below Earth's surface as well as is the atmosphere
Groundwater Water that soaks into the ground, filling up openings in the soil and cracks within the rock, makes up 30% of freshwater
Ice/Froze water Makes up 69% of freshwater
Surface water Still or moving water on the surface of earth; makes up 0.35% of freshwater
Atmosphere/ bio water Water in the atmosphere and water found in living things; makes up 0.65% of freshwater
Water cycle The series of natural processes by which water continually moves throughout the hydrosphere. As water moves through this cycle, it continually changes state
Evaporation Is when liquid water heats up and changes to a gas called water vapor. (the process of a liquid changing into a gas)
Water Vapor Water in a gas form
Transpiration Is the process where water moves through small pores on the leaves of plants and changes to water vapor in the atmosphere
Condensation Occurs when water vapor cools and changes back into liquid water. (the processes of a gas changing into a liquid)
Precipitation Water drops that fall to earth as rain, sleet, snow, or hail
Runoff Water from precipitation that flows over Earths surface
Rills Tiny groves in the soil that have been eroded as runoff moves downhill across the land
Gullies Larger channels of water
Streams Any naturally flowing channel of water
Tributaries Streams or rivers that flow into larger rivers
Watershed The entire area of land that drains runoff into a particular body of water
Headwaters Small streams that form near divides as water journey from the mountains downwards
V-shaped valley Formed when a fast-flowing river erodes steep mountain slopes rapidly
Waterfalls Formed when a flat layer of very hard rock lies over a soft rock that erodes easily
Rapid Super fast flowing water in a river
Run Medium pace flowing water in a river
Pool Slow moving or still water in a river
Flood plain A flat wide area of land around a river that can easily be saturated with water
Meanders Loop like bends in the course of a river
Oxbow lake When a meander is cut off from a river. It resembles a horse-shoe shape
Deposition When water or wind deposits or added dirt/ land to a area
Erosion When water or wind knocks off dirt or smooths an area of land
Delta A build up of land forms when sediment is deposited from a river flowing into an ocean or lake
Ponds Are a smaller and shallower, and sunlight usually reaches to the bottom of all parts of a pond
Habitat Is the place where an organism lives and obtains all things it needs to survive
Lakes Generally deep, still bodies of water, and sunlight does not reach the sandy, pebbly bottom
Depressions Large dips or craters in the land
Wetland An area of land covered with water during al or part of the year
