| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| chloroplast | organelle found in cells of plants, algae, and phytoplankton, where photosynthesis happens |
| cellular respiration | process by which sugar molecules combine with oxygen to release energy |
| chemical equation | a way to describe a chemical reaction using chemical formulas and other symbols |
| chemical reaction | the process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances |
| chlorophyll | a green pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants, algae, and phytoplankton used for photosynthesis |
| consumer | an organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms |
| energy | the ability to do work or cause change |
| energy transformation | a change from one form of energy to another |
| interdependence | the dependence of two or more processes or organisms on each other |
| mitochondrion | organelle known as the "powerhouse of the cell" because it is where energy is released in the cell |
| organelle | a tiny structure that carries out a specific function within the cell |
| photosynthesis | process by which plants, algae, and phytoplankton, use light energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and sugar (food); stores energy |
| phytoplankton | microscopic organisms that live and float in watery environments, both salty and fresh; some are bacteria, some are protists, and most are single-celled plants. |
| producer | an organism that makes its own food through photosynthesis |
| product | a substance produced/made in a chemical reaction; "end-products" |
| reactant | a substance that is present at the start of a chemical reaction; "ingredients" |
