How are magistrates paid? Claim for expenses under s15 CJA 2003
What are the ages for becoming a magistrate? 18-65
What are the barriers for becoming a magistrate? Undisclosed bankrupt, relevant disability, serving member of armed forces, police officer/traffic warden, relative
What are the six key qualities? GRMJCS: Good Character, Reliability, Maturity, Judgement, Communication, Social awareness
How are magistrates selected? Applications given to local advisory committee, then undergo two interviews. + Consider how the bench reflects community
What is the first interview in magistrate selection for? assess some key qualities, visits to court, application form
What is the second interview in magistrate selection for? assess judgement, and other outstanding key qualities
How are magistrates appointed? Advisory committee refers application to the senior presiding judge, who may appoint them as a lay justice to a particular area
