Solar System

QuestionAnswer
earth is at the center geocentric
sun is in the center heliocentric
Who thought heliocentric was right? Copernicus & Galileo
How does the motion of planets differ in each system? Geocentric-planets revolve aaround EarthHeliocentric-all planets revolve around the sun
How does Earth's motion differ in each system? Geocentric-Eathis not movingHeliocentric-Earth rotates on its axis and revolves around the sun
Galileo made 2 discoveries that supported the heliocentric model. What were they? 1. 4 moons revolving around Jupiter2. Venus goes throuh phases similar to those of the moon
Copercunis & Ptolemy assumed the orbits of the planets are what? circles(They're wrong!)
Tycho Brahe observed the positions of the planets for how long? 20 years
Johannes Kepler analyzed Brahe's data. True or false? True.
The planets orbits are what? Ellipse.
What is an ellipse? an elongated circle or oval.
Whi discovered the correct shape of the planet's orbit? Kepler
What 2 factors are combined to keep the planets in orbit? And Who concluded this? Inertia and gravity. Isaac Newton.
What is the tendancy of a moving object to continue in a straight line or stationary object to remain in place? Inertia.(the more mass the object has, the more inertia it has.)
What does the strength of gravty depend on? 1.the mass of the object.2. the distance between them.
What has the most powerful force in the entire solar system? The sun.
The sun only has and interior. True or Flase? FALSE! It has an interior AND and atmosphere.
The sun's energy comes from where? necular fusion.
What happens during necular fusion? hydrogen atoms join together to form He.
When does necular fusion happen? It occurs under extremly high temperatures.
What are the sun's 3 layers of its atmosphere? 1.photosphere2.chromosphere3.corona
They're many boundries between layers. True or False? FALSE! They're NO boundries between the layers of the sun.
What layer is the Photosphere in the Sun's atmosphere? The inner layer.(Even though it is the part in which you see in photographs)i
What is the layer is the Chromosphere in the sun's atmosphere? The middle layer.
What layer is the corona in the sun's atmosphere? The outer layer, which looks like a halo. The Corona is only visible during eclipses or from special telescopes.
What is the river of electrically charged particles produced by the corona. Then the magnetic soccer field generally blocks these particles. Then the particles enter Earth's atmosphere through the North and South poles. They hit gas molecules and make the Solar Wind
When can you see the Earth's corona? during an eclipse
What are the feature's above the sun's surface? sunspotsProminencessolar flares
What are areas of gas on the sun that are cooler tan the gasses around them? SUNSPOTS!
Whay are sunspots darker than the rest of the rest of the sun? Because they are cooler gasses.
Whay is the corona called the corona? Because it surronds the sun like a crown.
What is the source of light that reaches Earth from the sun? The photosphere.
Why is the core called the core? Because it is at the center.
What is the source of energy for the light and heat produced by the sun? necular fusion.
what are prominences? Prominences are reddish loops of gas that link different part of sunspot regions. sunspots usually occur in pairs or groups.
Solar flares are waves. True or false? False1 they are explosions. They can increase the solar wind from the corona. This can cause magnetic storms in Earth's upper atmosphere. These storms oftwn disrupt radio, telephone, & TV signals.
What is extraterrestrial life mean? life other than on earth.
