tragicomedy | plays that fall in the middle of the tragic/comedy spectrum. Focus on both high and low characters and situations, bring a potentially tragic plot to a tragic resolution. |
novel of incident | the main focus is on the course and outcome of events in the plot. |
novel of character | primary interest is in the protagonist's thoughts, feelings and motives and in the way the character's develops |
realistic novel | depicts a fictional world that closely resembles the events, social interactions, settings, motivations and feelings encountered by everyday life. |
romance | focuses on characters that are less three-dimensional and more likely to be depicted as either heroic or villainous |
Bildungsroman | depicts the intellectual and emotional development of a protagonist that childhood and adulthood |
epistolary novel | comprised of a series of letters between characters |
antinovel | a work that derives its effects from shying away from standard features such as coherent plot, established setting, and character development |
metafiction | incorporates the process by which the author creates the work and the ways that reader responds to it into the work |
novella | falls between the novel and the short story in both length and complexity |
direct satire | a first person narrator addresses a specific audience whom he expects will sympathize with the views expressed |
indirect satire | not cast in the form of direct address to the audience; rather it is implied by simply representing their thoughts, words and actions |
personification | an abstract concept, animal or inanimate object is treated as though it were alive or had human attributes |
pathetic fallacy | special type of personification; inanimate aspects of nature (landscape or weather) are represent as having human qualities. |
metonymy | substitutes the name of an entity with something else that is closely associated with the (the "throne" fro the "king") |
