Unit 11 LE Vocab

Mitosis, Cancer, and Asexual Reproduction

TermDefinition
Cancer uncontrolled cell division
Tumor mass of cells that have piled on top of each other
Mitosis type of cell division in which one parent cell divides into two daughter cells that are identical; also refers to division of the nucleus
Cell Cycle Stages G1, S, G2, M
G1 phase phase of the cell cycle when the cell is growing and performing normal functions
S phase phase of the cell cycle when the DNA is replicated (copied)
G2 phase phase of the cell cycle when the cell is preparing to divide
M phase the phases of the cell cycle when the nucleus is dividing
Stages of Mitosis Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
Interphase Consistes of G1, S, and G2 phases of the cell cycle. Cells spend most of their time in this part of the cell cycle.
Cytokinesis the division of the cytoplasm
Prophase Chromatin condenses into chromosomes, spindle fibers form, centrioles move to opposite poles of the cell
Metaphase chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
Anaphase spindle fibers pull the sister chromatids to opposite poles of the cell
Telophase two new nuclei form
DNA genetic material in cells
Chromosome condensed DNA
Chromatin DNA when it's not condensed
DNA Replication when a copy of all the DNA in the cell is made
Chromatid a single chromosome
Centromere Where two sister chromatids connect
Sister Chromatids identical copies of a chromosome
Gene a section of DNA that codes for a protein
Asexual reproduction reproduction that produces genetically identical offspring from a single parent
Sexual reproduction reproduction that produces genetically different offspring from two parents
Binary Fission a type of asexual reproduction in which a cell grows, then splits into two
Vegetative Propagation a type of asexual reproduction in plants. Examples include tubers, runners, rhizomes, and bulbs
Budding a type of asexual reproduction in which a small copy of an organism "buds" off of the parent organism, then grows into a full grown individual

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
