Water Quality
Water Quality Terminology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| pH | A scale of how acidic or basic water is - measures how many hydrogen ions are in a liquid on a scale of 0-14, 0 having a high concentration of hydrogen ions and being the most acidic, and 0 having the least and being the most basic. |
| Alkalinity | The measure of how well water can neutralize acids or resist changes that make the water acidic |
| Buffer | Water mixed with a chemical which helps it resist changes in pH |
| Ammonia | A form of nitrogen in aquatic environments that is a major waste product in fish. when there are high levels in water, it has toxic effects on aquatic life by building up in the body and can lead to death if not treated. |
| Nitrosomonas Bacteria | The microorganism responsible for turning ammonia into nitrite, is under the category of nitrifying bacteria. |
| Nitrite | An unwanted toxic waste formed by the addition of oxygen to ammonia by bacteria that is harmful to fish. |
| Nitrobacter Bacteria | An aerobic, autotrophic, and slow growing bacteria that converts nitrite to nitrate |
| Nitrate | A salt or ester (fat) of nitric acid harmful to fry and juveniles and will negatively affect their growth and decrease oxygen levels, High concentrated amounts will kill fish within 24 hours. |
| Dissolved Oxygen | A measure of how much oxygen is blended in the water - the amount of oxygen available to living aquatic organisms. |
| Temperature | A measurement of how warm or cold water is - measured in degrees Celsius (C) or degrees Fahrenheit (F) and measured with a thermometer and affect what organisms can and can't live in the water. |
| D.O. saturation | Saturation refers to the levels of dissolved oxygen in water in relation to temperature |
| Siphon | A tube or pipe which allows water to flow from a high place, over a higher point and then down to a lower level. It use gravity to suck the water and debris out of your aquarium. |
| Biological filtration | The process by which dissolved waste is removed from a tank by bacterial action |
| Centrifugal pump | A device designed to move fluid by means of the transfer of rotational energy |
| Bio ball | A round ball that holds beneficial bacteria for/from your tank, but it does not remove waste products. |
| Colormetric | The scale used to measure chemical reading utilizing colors (pH, Alkalinity, etc.) |
| Salinity | The measure of dissolved salts in water |
