| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Thermal Energy | Sum of the kinetic energy and the potential energy of the particles that make up a material |
| Temperature | Represents the average kinetic energy of the particles that make up a material |
| Conduction | Transfer of thermal energy through direct contact |
| Radiation | Transfer of thermal energy from one material to another by electromagnetic waves |
| Convection | When moving fluids (liquid or gases) rise and fall due to differences in density caused by differences in thermal energy |
| Insulator | Material through which thermal energy does not flow easily |
| Conductor | Material through which thermal energy flows easily |
| Kinetic Energy | Energy of Motion |
| Heat | Movement of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler object |
| Molecule | A group of atoms put together |
| Celcius | When water freezes at zero degrees (Metric) |
| Fahrenheit | When water freezes at thirty two degrees (American) |
| Density | A measure of the amount of mass in a certain space |
