Elements of a Plot

TermDefinition
plot the events that happen in the story
exposition usually occurs at the beginning of the story; the characters and setting is introduced
conflict the main problem that the protagonist faces
protagonist main character
rising action the part of the story when the main conflict, or problem, unfolds and starts to create interest, or builds tension or suspense; it leads to the climax
climax the highest point of tension or drama in a story, or its major turning point
falling action part of a story immediately following the climax, when the story starts to slow down
resolution the part of the story when the main conflict is resolved
setting where and when the story takes place
theme the message the author is trying to communicate to the reader
characters people and animals (maybe) that are part of the story
