5th Science: 5.E.1: Disc. Ed. Unit 8: Concept 8.3: Weather Data
Term | Definition |
---|---|
meteorology | the study of patterns of weather |
dew point | the temperature at which water vapor in the air condenses into water |
weather | the properties of the atmosphere at a given time and location, including temperature, air movement and precipitation |
forecast | (v) to analyze weather data and make an educated guess about weather in the future (n) a prediction about what the weather will be like in the future based on weather data |
flood | (n) a situation in which water has flowed over the edges of a river; (v) to overflow |
energy (physical) | the ability to do work or cause change; can be changed into different forms and can move between objects |
air pressure | the force that air puts on an area |
data | measurements or observations |
Celsius | the metric temperature scale: Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius, and it freezes at 0 degrees Celsius. |
tides | the rise and fall of the ocean's surface levels due to the gravitational pull of the sun and moon |
evidence | data or information that either supports a statement or shows that it is not true |
front | in weather, the boundary between two masses of air with different properties |
observe | to study something using your senses |
pressure | the force per unit area exerted on an object |
thermometer (weather) | a device used to measure temperature |
measure | to use a tool to learn more about the volume, length or weight of an object |
climate | the average weather conditions in an area |
temperate | describes a climate that does not have extremes of hot or cold |
wind | the movement of air due to atmospheric pressure differences |
barometer | a tool used to measure air pressure |
Farenheit | the customary temperature scale in the United States: Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, and it freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit. |
degree | a unit of measurement of temperature |
analyze | to figure out what data or information means |
predict | to guess what will happen in the future |
hypothesis | a prediction based on background knowledge saying what is expected to happen in an experiment; an explanation as to why something happened based on what was observed |
satellite | a natural or artificial object that revolves around another object in space |
map | a flat model of an area |
detect | to notice or find, often with the help of a science tool |
temperature (weather) | the measure of how hot or cold the air is outside |
