5th Science: 5.E.1: Water & Weather
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Dew Point | the temperature at which water vapor in the air condenses into water |
| Thunderstorm | a weather system that produces heavy precipitation, winds, lightning, and thunder |
| Rain | liquid water that falls from the sky |
| Vapor | water in the gaseous state of matter |
| Humidity | the measure of how much water vapor is in the air |
| Hurricane | a storm with strong winds and rain that forms over tropical waters (related term: typhoon, tropical cyclone) |
| Funnel Cloud | a rotating, funnel-shaped cloud: Funnel clouds do not touch the ground. |
| Moisture | a measure of how much water is in something (related word: moist) |
| cumulus cloud | large, fluffy, white clouds, often seen in fair skies; can develop into cumulonimbus clouds |
| Evaporation | the process in which matter changes from a liquid to a gas (related word: evaporate) |
| water vapor | the gaseous form of water; produced when water evaporates |
| air pressure | the force that air puts on an area (related word: pressure) |
| water | a compound made of hydrogen and oxygen |
| cloud | a collection of water droplets or ice crystals in the atmosphere |
| cirrus cloud | thin, wispy-looking clouds; commonly found at heights greater than 6 km |
| solar energy | energy that comes from the sun |
| atmosphere | layers of gas that surround a planet (related word: atmospheric) |
| condense | to turn from a gas into a liquid (related word: condensation) |
| cumulonimbus cloud | anvil-shaped cloud that is often involved in heavy or violent storms: also called thunderheads. |
| waterspout | a funnel-shaped cloud that forms over water and pulls water upward |
| temperature | the measure of how hot or cold the air is outside |
| precipitation | water that is released from clouds in the sky; includes rain, snow, sleet, hail, and freezing rain |
| climate | the average weather conditions in an area |
| air | the part of the atmosphere closest to Earth; the part of the atmosphere that organisms on Earth use for respiration |
| wind | the movement of air due to atmospheric pressure differences |
| water cycle | the continual movement of water between the land, ocean, and the air |
| barometer | a tool used to measure air pressure |
| convection | the rising of hot air above cooler air, which produces air currents |
