Term | Definition |
---|---|
Air Pressure | The force that air puts on an area. |
Conduction | The transfer of heat energy within an object, or between objects that are directly touching each other, due to collisions between the particles in the objects. |
Gas | A state of matter without any defined volume or shape. |
Kinetic Energy | The energy an object has because of its motion |
Liquid | A state of matter with a defined volume but no defined shape and whose molecules roll past each other. |
Matter | Material that has mass and takes up some amount of space. |
Mixture | A combination of substances that can be physically separated from one another. |
Pure Substance | A material with a particular chemical makeup. Gold and silver are metal elements. Elements are made of just one type of atom. |
Solid | Matter with a fixed volume and shape. |
Temperature | A measure of the average kinetic energy of the atoms in a system, used to express thermal energy in degrees. |
Thermal Energy | Energy in the form of heat. |
Boiling Point | The temperature at which a liquid changes into a gas. |
Condensation | The process by which gas changes into a liquid. |
Evaporation | The process in which matter changes from a liquid to gas. |
Freezing Point | The temperature at which a liquid turns into a solid. |
Melting Point | The temperature at which a solid turns into a liquid. |
Atom | The smallest unit of an element that has all the chemical properties of that element. |
Chemical Formula | A set of symbols used to describe the elements within a substance. |
Chemical Symbol | The one- or two-letter representation of an element. |
Compound | A pure substance that is formed when two or more different elements combine; can usually be separated into component elements by chemical reaction. |
Element | A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions. |
Molecule | Two or more atoms joined together. |
Polymer | A large molecule that is made of small molecules that are arranged in a repeating structure. |
