7th Grade- Discovery Education Unit 1 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Air Pressure The force that air puts on an area.
Conduction The transfer of heat energy within an object, or between objects that are directly touching each other, due to collisions between the particles in the objects.
Gas A state of matter without any defined volume or shape.
Kinetic Energy The energy an object has because of its motion
Liquid A state of matter with a defined volume but no defined shape and whose molecules roll past each other.
Matter Material that has mass and takes up some amount of space.
Mixture A combination of substances that can be physically separated from one another.
Pure Substance A material with a particular chemical makeup. Gold and silver are metal elements. Elements are made of just one type of atom.
Solid Matter with a fixed volume and shape.
Temperature A measure of the average kinetic energy of the atoms in a system, used to express thermal energy in degrees.
Thermal Energy Energy in the form of heat.
Boiling Point The temperature at which a liquid changes into a gas.
Condensation The process by which gas changes into a liquid.
Evaporation The process in which matter changes from a liquid to gas.
Freezing Point The temperature at which a liquid turns into a solid.
Melting Point The temperature at which a solid turns into a liquid.
Atom The smallest unit of an element that has all the chemical properties of that element.
Chemical Formula A set of symbols used to describe the elements within a substance.
Chemical Symbol The one- or two-letter representation of an element.
Compound A pure substance that is formed when two or more different elements combine; can usually be separated into component elements by chemical reaction.
Element A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions.
Molecule Two or more atoms joined together.
Polymer A large molecule that is made of small molecules that are arranged in a repeating structure.
