Unit 10 LE Vocab

Nervous and Endocrine Systems

TermDefinition
Function of the nervous system help maintain homeostasis by responding to stimuli; coordinate all other systems using chemical and electrical messages
Function of the endocrine system help maintain homeostasis by responding to stimuli using hormones
Cell body part of a neuron that contains the nucleus and other organelles
Dendrite branches off the cell body that receive chemical messages (neurotransmitters) from other neurons
Axon transmits electrical impulses from dendrite to axon terminals
Axon terminal contains vesicles that release neurotransmitters into the synapse
Synapse the gap between two neurons
Receptor protein on the surface of a cell that receives a chemical message with a complementary shape
Impulse electrical message in the nervous system
Neurotransmitter chemical messages that help neurons communicate with each other
Gland organ that makes and releases hormones
Hormone proteins that send chemical messages in the endocrine system
Target cell the cells that will respond to a hormone message
Target organ the organ the hormone will affect
Pituitary Gland A gland in the brain that makes hormones that control many other glands. Ex- Growth hormone
Hypothalamus A gland in the brain that makes hormones that control the pituitary gland
Thyroid Gland A gland that makes hormones that regulate our metabolism
Adrenal Gland A gland that maks hormones that help our body deal with stress
Pancreas A gland that makes insulin and glucagon to control our blood sugar
Insulin the hormone that lowers blood sugar
Glucagon the hormone that raises blood sugar
Glycogen the polysaccharide that is stored in our liver when excess sugar is consumed
Testes glands that make testosterone
Ovaries glands that make progesterone and estrogen
Negative feedback loop a system that helps us mainting dynamic equilibrium by decreasing function of a gland when a certain amount of a hormone is present
Hormone chemical messenger made of protein that has a shape complementary to a specific receptor

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
