Adaptation
| Term | Definition |

| DNA | holds the “blueprint” for life; contains all the genetic material for an organism |
| genes | small sections of DNA that code for proteins which determine traits |
| traits | characteristics or an organism; the phenotype based on the genotype |
| offspring | the children of parents; the next generation after parents |
| genetic variation | organisms in a population have different codes for the same traits |
| generation | time between the birth of an organism(s) until that organism(s) has offspring |
| population | two or more of the same kind of organisms; i.e. human population |
| natural selection | a process of change over generations; survival of the fittest; best adapted survive and reproduce |
| survival | to live; to continue living |
| adaptation | a trait that increases an organism’s ability to survive in its environment |
| environment | natural world; surroundings |
| reproduction | process of making offspring; can be asexual or sexual |
| fitness | ability to adapt and pass on those adaptable traits to the next generation |
