Natural Hazards

natural hazard a natural process that may cause widespread injury, death, and property damage
natural disaster widespread injury, death, and property damage caused by a natural hazard.
geologic hazards hazards caused by geologic processes such as plate motion. Examples: landslides, earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions
weather and climate hazards hazards caused by weather conditions and patterns. Examples: droughts, hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, severe thunderstorms, and floods
frequency how often events occur
magnitude how large events are
volcanic eruption a geologic hazard in which molten rock, gases, ash, and other materials are released onto Earth's surface and into the atmosphere
supercell rotating thunderstorms
The Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF Scale) the scale that describes tornado damage
tsunamis powerful ocean waves that can flood coastal areas
tornado a rapidly spinning column of air extending from a storm cloud to the ground
seismometer detects vibrations in the ground, to monitor earthquake activity.
tiltmeter monitors changes in a volcano's shape that are related to pressure changes inside a volcano.
